Being a missionary is like being at the beach.

You follow a winding path of obstacles, then you get there and look out across the sea of possibilities. God calls you out into the water. Satan tries to knock you down into the waves. His pull is great, but if you just find that solid ground beneath you, God will help you stand. Sometimes you’re so exhausted you feel like you can’t go on. Then there’s that little voice within telling you to take one more step, one more leap, and you press onward. You look, you find, you think you can take that chance.

As a missionary, you want to share Jesus’s love with everyone, but not everyone wants to listen. Likewise, you’re in the ocean searching for the perfect wave to ride. You look and look hoping that the one right in front of you will be the one. However, God has other plans. Disappointment tries to wiggle it’s way inside you, but God says lean on me, trust me and follow me. It’s the only way. He gives you the greatest opportunity. He uses you in the most perfect way ever that you finally understand why he made you wait in the first place. In the waves, you jump at the opportunity, keep your eyes ahead and your hope in The Lord and you ride the thrill of your life as he pushes you to the shore.

I already know that there are going to be moments in the year ahead where I will be exhausted, burned out, and disappointed, but when those months come, I have to remember what I learned today. When those “waves” knock me down, I just need to get back up. Jesus will provide the support and rest I need to keep on moving. I don’t know what he has planned for me, but I can’t give up. I have to press forward because the thrill will come when I least expect it, and I don’t want to miss any minute of it.

I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus. (Philippians 3:14)
